Founded in 1867,
the YWCA Greater Rhode Island has a strong history of helping those
in need.
Several
RI agencies were born out of our YW’s work:
♦ 1894 – Creation of RI
Traveler’s Aid
(Now known as Crossroads)
♦ 1921 – Founded the
International Institute Rhode Island
♦ 1977 – Founded the RI
Rape Crisis Center (Now known as Day One)
♦ 1980s – Founded the
Blackstone Shelter for battered women
Current
programs and services we offer:
Play Plus: For over 15 years,
the YWCA Greater Rhode Island has offered low-cost day care for 3 to
5 year old children. In a safe, nurturing environment, children are
exposed to reading, writing, and hands-on projects. The program is
bi-lingual and bi-cultural with staff who speak Spanish, Cape
Verdean Creole, and English. For more information, contact

(School Aged Child Care): For
over 15 years, the YWCA Greater Rhode Island has provided before and
after school care for 6 to 12 year old children. Parents and
guardians are able to drop their children off early in the morning
and the YW will bring them to school, from school and provides after
school care. Children receive assistance with their homework and are
able to participate in various recreational activities. For more

(Volunteer Income Tax Assistance): Since 2004, the YWCA
Greater Rhode Island has provided free tax preparation and financial
education for low-income families. Translation is provided in
Spanish, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, and English. For more

(Sarah Francis Grant): Permanent Supportive Housing -
Since November 2004, the YWCA Greater Rhode Island has provided
housing for homeless women. Residents have a single bedroom and
share common areas such as the living room, dining room, kitchen and
bathrooms. Women who have experienced trauma in their lives are
welcomed in and receive one on one support to improve their lives.

SPEAK (Survivors Provide Education, Affirmation and Kinship):
The YWCA Greater RI provides FREE support groups for adult survivors
of childhood sexual abuse and supportive family members. Groups are
held in Spanish every Wednesday from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at 43 Hawes
Street Central Falls RI (Free transportation and daycare are
available for the Spanish groups). English groups are held
every Thursday from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at 103 Corliss Street
Providence RI. The Spanish program is the first of its kind in USA
history. And this is the first time in RI history that a FREE
support group has been offered for sexual abuse survivors. For
