Executive Director

The Executive Director (ED) is the senior employee at the YWCA Greater Rhode Island and provides leadership to assure the overall success of the organization. The ED is responsible for financial welfare of the YWCA and advancement of its mission, and serves as the chief fundraiser and spokesperson. The ED reports to the Board of Directors, but has ultimate authority for the selection, retention, management and development of all managers and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Executive Director

Internal

1. Sets and accomplishes the YWCA’s financial objectives so as to provide adequate operational funds and reserves for long-term welfare of the organization.

2. Sustains a vibrant and varied program of philanthropic support that is managed under the highest standards of stewardship for all gifts, grants and other assets received by the YWCA.

3. Advances the mission of the YWCA and provides high-quality customer/client service with programs and services that accomplish positive change, align with the values and interests in the community, and are sustainable at an appropriate level.

4. Provides leadership to employees who hold management responsibilities and accomplishes the following:

·          sets and monitors goals and work standards for the recruitment, selection, job orientation, professional development and evaluation of all employees  

·          maintains a safe and legal work environment

·          assures that accurate and timely management information is gathered, analyzed and applied to the development of strategic, business and marketing plans

·         guides the Management Team, and where it is appropriate the Board, through the creation of the YWCA’s written strategic, business and marketing plans, and their application in operations of the organization.

5. Serves on the Board of Directors, serves on or designates other senior staff as representatives to committees of the Board, and provides support to the President of the Board on the functioning of the Board.

External

1. Represents the YWCA in person to all of its external constituencies in a manner compatible with the goals and image of the organization and its mission of eliminating and the empowering women.

2. Cultivates current and prospective donors and donor organizations for the YWCA in compliance with the fundraising profession’s code of ethics and in the best interest of the YWCA.

3. Maintains professional relations and communications with colleagues in Rhode Island, YWCA New England Region and YWCA USA .

Education

Requires the minimum of a four-year college degree. Experience in lieu of education will be considered.

Experience Required
Requires relevant experience in middle or senior-management assignments. Requires demonstrated success with budgets, managing projects and providing line supervision to manager-level employees. Strong oral and written communication skills are expected.

Professional experience in the non-profit environment preferred. Ability to build/sustain networks and partnerships highly desirable.

Special Requirements
Ability to develop strong and productive relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, ranging from clients, customers and staff to Board members, donors, and civic, social, corporate and political leaders, and others of the nonprofit community.

Ability to participate in evening and weekend meetings and events, as needed locally, and to engage in occasional travel related to YWCA regional and national activities.

Commitment to continuing professional development on topics relevant to the various business and service models in operation at the YWCA, and in the broad fields of human services, philanthropy and community development.
